Flexibility and adaptability are what we need in this day and age.” It’s this belief in – and comfort around – continuous change that inspired the design’s flexibility, from the table that rises up to the ceiling when not needed to the café bar that extends out into the street. Underpinning both NIO’s and Rotterdam’s distinctive styles are a sense of optimism and progressivism. “Yet the more we thought about the character of both, the more overlap we saw. “Combining the style of NIO with the attitude of the city of Rotterdam seems at first like a difficult challenge”, says MVRDV founding partner Jacob van Rijs. Alongside the crane table is a lounge space complete with blue furniture behind the main space are two meeting rooms with warm red accents finally, next to these meeting rooms is a play space or “joy camp” for children completed in a bright yellow. Suspended on pulleys, this table is easily lifted out of the way to make a forum space, while movable partitions can also slide into place to define a space for presentations, workshops, and lectures.Ĭomplementing the white and caramel colours of the main space, the design incorporates a series of accent colours into its specialised spaces that unite the NIO brand and the character of Rotterdam. At the heart of the space is a long communal “crane table” where visitors can drink their coffee, chat with others, and work on their laptops. Raw, exposed concrete columns and ruggedly engineered details provide touches of Rotterdam character to accentuate the pure and minimalist NIO vision. In fact, throughout the design, the materials provide a sustainable twist on NIO’s typical material palette: in addition to the recycled plastic terrazzo, the design uses sustainability-certified wood with a bio-based coating, carpets and upholstery with 100% natural fibres, and vegan leather. This is achieved with a terrazzo-like material known as The Good Floor, which recycles plastic pollution that is recovered from the Maas river nearby. The separation between the gallery at the front of the store – where visitors can learn about NIO’s range of cars – and the welcoming clubhouse at the rear is apparent thanks to a gradient in the colour of the floor and walls, which gradually transform from white to a warm caramel. Meanwhile, the most prominent corner makes space for a “hero view” of one of the cars, with the wall behind it providing a backdrop of artworks. While the main façade onto the street provides a showcase for the company’s cars, the side façade can be opened thanks to sliding windows and the café bar inside can be extended through these open windows to create a canal-side outdoor café on sunny days. Situated among the cafés and clothing stores of Meent, NIO House Rotterdam uses moving elements to take full advantage of its location in a corner unit alongside a canal. At the same time, it embraces NIO’s signature approach to its retail locations – which incorporate welcoming elements including a café, lounge, children’s play area, forum, work rooms, and art display – to create a flexible interior space that contributes to the vitality of its location on one of the city’s most prestigious shopping streets. With an interior design by MVRDV, the store mixes the rugged and bold expression of the city of Rotterdam with the sophisticated yet warm aesthetic of the NIO brand. NIO House Rotterdam, the first location in the Netherlands for the electric car manufacturer NIO, is now open. Regardless of whatever big transition you may be going through, the most important lesson I learned during mine was to check in with myself periodically to maintain my mental health, and ultimately stay sane during times that I felt like I was going insane.Īsking myself, what do I need, who can help me, how can I be successful, helped me prioritize and realize that adjustments take time and changes can be overwhelming, but self-awareness and self-care are imperative to making the transition as smooth as possible. Hearing the simplest words of affirmation from important people in my life- “it will all get done, it always does,” empowered me and assured me that I am capable of adjusting to a big transition. This one might sound cliché or redundant, but during this big transition, I realized that turning to the people in my life who I can count on to give me words of advice or even just listen when I needed an ear calmed me down and gave me a sense of comfort.įor me, this meant calling my parents every so often to hear their voices, or turning to my roommates when I arrived home after a long day. Turning to people in my life that support and empower me. I realized that carving out time in the day to take a short nap, lay in my bed for a few minutes, take a hot shower or just let myself be lazy on the couch for a few hours benefited me much more than pushing through when I knew I needed a break. After an extended period of time of feeling like I wasn’t my normal self, I called my doctor who comforted me by letting me know that all these strange feelings I was having were completely normal, and in fact they were pretty common when going through a big transition. Quickly upon arriving back in Madison, I realized my body felt off. Traveling across the country to move by myself was an added layer of stress that I knew would challenge me. Moving is exhausting and starting a new school year can be overwhelming. Taking time to simply reflect, check in with myself, and reset if I felt like I needed it helped me in adjusting to big changes in my life. I made sure that for at least a short period of time during each day, I would close my bedroom door and let myself just be, which can sometimes be challenging when life at college moves so fast. The first thing I learned is that taking time alone is necessary to maintain a positive mental attitude. I’ve spent the last few years working on myself to become more confident mentally, physically, and emotionally. I realized a lot of things about myself and more importantly, tried to pinpoint strategies for myself to relieve the stress and chaos that comes with big transitions. I learned a lot from the experience and moving across the country into a completely different environment prompted a lot of self-reflection. I’ve never lived on my own in the sense that I have the responsibility to cook, clean, pay my own rent, and all of the other tasks that come along with being an official “apartment owner.” I transitioned from living in a house to an apartment with three other girls. The idea of moving my entire life back to the state of Wisconsin from San Francisco was daunting for me, especially after getting so comfortable spending my summer in my hometown. Most college students know that it’s not always easy transitioning from the comforts of home to a new living environment at school. Please welcome the first blog post from our fall/winter intern: Amanda Briskin! Choosing a college is hard, but actually moving away (or not) and starting college is one of the biggest life transitions for a young adult. If you are like many high school students, fall/wintertime is THE time to go travel and visit college campuses to see what life has to offer post high school.Īt Synergy eTherapy, we are super lucky to have 2 amazing college interns who have made the transition (and arguably, will be continuing to make this transition throughout their 4+ years!) and can shed some light onto the subject. Drink Safely And Sustainably: The Benefits Of Stainless Steel Water Bottles As a result, it is ideal for tumblers because it can withstand normal wear and tear for up to five years. They have a longer lifespan than other materials, in my opinion. How Long Does A Stainless Steel Mug Last?Īll stainless steel tumblers are required, and you must purchase them. With the assistance of this knowledge, you can make educated decisions and take appropriate precautions to ensure the safety and longevity of stainless steel products. This study demonstrates once again that stainless steel cannot be completely immune to damage, and it should be remembered that bacteria and tea staining pose potential risks. It is critical to remove the staining as soon as possible, as this may cause an allergic reaction. This staining is primarily cosmetic, but it will most likely progress to more serious corrosion if not treated. It will most likely progress to corrosion in the next few years if not treated. Tea stains, in addition to stainless steel surface corrosion, can harm the tea. This study discovered that pathogens can survive on stainless steel surfaces for extended periods of time due to the type of pathogen, contamination level, and number of contaminants present. Recently, it has been discovered that bacteria can grow on stainless steel surfaces and that tea can cause corrosion on stainless steel. It is a well-known material that is well-liked by many companies for its durability and corrosion resistance. Although this does not pose a significant health risk for most people, Silvio still advises that people only use stainless steel cups and bottles. Is It Safe To Drink Coffee From Stainless Steel?Īs a result, the acidity of coffee can cause stainless steel to degrade over time, releasing potentially toxic particles such as nickel. To avoid compromising the flavor of your coffee, make sure your stainless steel cup is completely clean before using it, and clean it only once with a non-abrasive cleaning agent. Because the flavors in the cup can be changed, the taste of coffee can change. As a result, stainless steel can absorb flavors from previous drinks or other items that have been in the cup, such as soap. Ceramic does outperform stainless steel in terms of extending the life of coffee, but it does so at a slightly slower rate.Īccording to a scientific standpoint, stainless steel has a stable and inert nature, which means that its taste does not change when it is used in coffee. Despite the fact that stainless steel coffee mugs can be dropped multiple times or used frequently, they are still perfectly functional. Steel tumblers can keep coffee hot or cold for a long time, making them one of the best products on the market. These stainless steel cups are also designed to be travel-friendly in addition to being stylish. The stainless steel is commonly used in lightweight coffee mugs for elderly people because it is easier to keep. Stainless steel mugs can last for a long time and are ideal for coffee lovers due to their durability. In terms of both health and environmental benefits, it is the most efficient and practical material choice. This material is ideal for use with temperature-sensitive liquids, it is highly durable, and it is one of the most recyclable materials for drinkware. Steel is a popular material for reusable travel mugs. To effectively clean stainless steel, the use of these products is a simple way to avoid damaging the material. Furthermore, distilled vinegar can be used to clean stainless steel because most cleaners dilute it with water or baking soda to make it more corrosion resistant. To get your stainless steel cup sparkling clean, add half a cup hydrogen peroxide and two tablespoons baking soda to a cup of water and soak it for 30 minutes. If you’re using stainless steel items, you can instead clean them with baking soda or hydrogen peroxide. Vinegar should not be stored in stainless steel appliances or water bottles because it can corrode them. Vinegar is generally regarded as an unsuitable cleaning agent for stainless steel. To achieve the best results, use extra vinegar to dilute it in order to keep your small kitchen appliances looking new for years to come. Make your own cleaning solution at home with vinegar, water, and baking soda, or buy a pre-made solution from a local store. If your appliances have stainless steel finishes, you must use diluted vinegar to keep them intact. However, it is critical to remember that concentrated vinegar can corrode stainless steel. Vinegar’s ability to clean plastic and glass surfaces is a great advantage when it comes to cleaning small kitchen appliances such as blenders, coffee makers, and toasters. But Stephens’s play is also an unfashionable testament to the power of family life. In the words of a haunting Jarvis Cocker song that, in a cappella form threads its way through the action, he is writing a “hymn of the north.” This is a London-based writer’s guilt-ridden love-letter to his native soil suggesting that, even in a time of economic hardship, there is much kindness and charity to be found in the northern heartlands.
